Summer Internship at Sharp Laboratories of America

This summer I joined Sharp Laboratories of America as a Communication Systems Research Intern (May-Aug 2025), working on standards-grade wireless channel modeling.

My main project was the development and validation of channel models aligned with the latest 3GPP TR 38.901 Release 18/19 specifications. The work spanned several environments, including indoor office, suburban macro (SMa), and near-field scenarios, and involved full-scale and near-field calibrations along with detailed base station and user terminal antenna modeling. I implemented these models in Python using NVIDIA’s Sionna framework and in MATLAB, and the results fed directly into the refinement of the official 3GPP TR 38.901 Release 19 specifications.

Alongside the modeling work, I contributed over 10,000 lines of code to NVIDIA Sionna, one of the leading open-source toolkits for link-level wireless simulation. Those contributions added new scenarios and channel models, resolved critical issues in topology generation and outdoor-to-indoor (O2I) modeling, and introduced structural improvements that made the simulations more robust and more accurate.

What I enjoyed most was how directly the two halves of the project fed each other: standardization research on one side, and the practical simulation tooling that the wider research community actually runs on the other. Many thanks to the team at Sharp Labs for a genuinely rewarding summer.
